Lofsöng: The gorgeous work-of-art indie game you might have missed during Gamescom ONL

As gamers, we’re always excited for events that showcase a bunch of games in one place, and Gamescom is one of the best. The convention is an annual celebration of reveals and updates for some of our favorite or most anticipated games, and Opening Night Live has been a staple since it began in 2019.
2026’s ONL was no different, with millions tuning in around the world (either live or after the fact) to see what’s coming and what updates were on offer. For us indie lovers, there were a few key moments, but perhaps none was more interesting than Lofsöng, which was questionably sandwiched between two huge reveals: Tides of Annihilation and Mega Man.
And, in my opinion, no other game in the ONL 2026 running order deserves more attention than Lofsöng.
Listen, I’m not saying that the other reveals weren’t amazing in their own right. But I’m an indie girlie, and I’ve struggled to get excited about any AA or AAA title in the last decade or so. Even the ones I am excited about, I approach their release with a healthy dose of skepticism and minimized expectations.
Lofsöng, which made up the filling of this big announcement sandwich during ONL 2026, stood out to me immediately as something that is not only trying something new, but is doing it in a way that looks absolutely gorgeous. It’s a work of art in playable form, and I don’t want it to be forgotten among the long list of announcements from the evening.
So here we are.
What is Lofsöng?

Lofsöng is a brutalist, art-driven exploration game by Unrelated Studio in which you traverse the long-abandoned Dust Sea with an origami, shape-shifting companion. The entire game is monochrome apart from the main character, an adorable dude who must learn about history through nothing but sound.
There are no spoken words in Lofsöng and no map. Exploration is driven by sound-based clues, leading you to geometric puzzles that uncover more of the secrets of history. Your origami companion will change and grow as you progress and uncover more of the story, unlocking new modes of travel to help you make your way around the Dust Sea.
In a world where many games seem to be obnoxiously loud and filled with distractions, Lofsöng offers a different gameplay experience: self-motivated exploration purely for the sake of knowing more. The story and the art style seem bleak at first glance, but I have a feeling there’s going to be more emotion in this game than we’re being prepared to expect.
That suspicion only grew after hearing creative director Alessandro Durando introduce Lofsöng during ONL. He described the game as being built around one central question:
“What do we leave behind, and whom?”
Considering we’ll be exploring what’s left of humanity with a companion that changes and grows as we progress through exploration, I’m already slightly concerned about what the answer might be, but I'm looking forward to finding out.
Lofsöng does not have a release date just yet, but this is definitely an indie gem to keep an eye on as it continues development. You can wishlist the game on Steam right now.
