If you’re a point-and-click fan, it’s safe to say we’re spoiled for choice at the moment with a long list of epic full games and tantalizing demos pouring their way into our Steam libraries. If you’ve got the space for one more, A Pretty Broken Adventure now has a demo available to play.
A Pretty Broken Adventure is a solo-development passion project by Christoph Schultz, who previously created Cleo – A Pirate’s Tale. He’s no stranger to the creation of epic point-and-clicks, and A Pretty Broken Adventure is no different. He’s also working on the upcoming Ghost Haunting, so Mr. Schultz is a very busy man, but his passion for the genre is clear.
A strange and chaotic cartoon world
In A Pretty Broken Adventure, you’re one of three young friends who tried to fix a broken video game cartridge and opened up a portal to alternate universes in the process, as you do. The three main characters, Lani, Collin, and Tiho, are sent to different places to explore and find their way back home.
The demo focuses on Tiho, who ends up in a strange town with a familiar tower at its heart. She is convinced that the answer to whatever is going on is at the top of the tower, but getting there will be a test of patience, logical thinking, and puzzle-solving skills. But all of that is done in a gorgeous and vibrant hand-drawn world that you can’t help but love and want to see more of.
The demo is limited, but it’s designed to be just a glimpse of what the full game will end up being. As a point-and-click fan, I can see the effort that has gone into this by Christoph, and there’s a lot of heart in the story. Even with the main characters that Tiho meets during the demo, you can tell where he’s taken inspiration from, or at the very least, they’ll spark connections from your own life.
So many Jeffs, so little time
Inside a bar called The Bearded Biscuit, you’ll find three characters to meet, and hovering over them will tell you that they are all called Jeff. There’s a fly, a koi carp, and a dinosaur. As the stars of this demo, outside of the character that you happen to play, you’ll spend some time getting to know each of them.
First, there’s Jeff the Dinosaur, who believes that you’re only as old as you feel and gives off vibes that immediately bring to mind the Steve Buscemi “how do you do, fellow kids” meme. Jeff the Fly comes off as a highly strung member of MENSA who thinks too highly of themselves, and Jeff the Koi is a paranoid, frazzled fish who reminds me of myself after a long day of my five-year-old asking me for something every 10 seconds.
Along with these three, you also get to meet Steve McClean, the AI robot tasked with keeping the fountain and the surrounding area clean. He has a particular dislike for Stonepeckers, and gets a bit neurotic when you question the cleanliness of the area around the fountain.
If you want a taste of what’s to come when A Pretty Broken Adventure gets a full release, you can head to Steam and download the demo right now. While you’re there, drop a wishlist and follow so you’re the first to hear of any development news!
