Deer & Boy proves you don't need words to tell an unforgettable story

I don’t tend to play many purely narrative games, mainly because I struggle to find the time to dedicate to them. Getting completely absorbed in a story woven through gameplay is not something you can pick up and put down; it’s like binge-watching a TV series, but you’re in control of what happens next. 

Deer & Boy by Lifeline Games brings together a runaway child and an isolated baby deer, following their journey as they traverse the world together as lost souls. It is a story told through visuals alone, with no text or voice acting to guide the way, but absolutely nothing is lost in translation. The gorgeous art of Deer & Boy communicates everything it needs to and will stay with you for a long time after you've finished playing. 

Deer, meet boy

The plot of Deer & Boy revolves around an unlikely friendship, an ill-advised adventure, and hiding from everyone who may put a stop to their journey. Historically, I’ve been terrible at these kinds of sneaking around games, but by the time I’d played just five minutes of the Deer & Boy demo, I was already so emotionally invested in the story that I bought the full game immediately and kept playing. 

It’s unclear, at least up until the point I’ve reached, why the boy has run away from home. It is clear how the deer came to be alone. In one word, you’ll know too: Bambi. What follows brings the two titular characters together. By that point, I already knew this game had the power to emotionally devastate me, and it pulls every string in perfect sequence to do exactly that. 

The thing is, you know what you're getting into with Deer & Boy. These events don’t come as a surprise; the visuals and the story are so compelling that you feel the need to continue despite knowing harrowing events are just around the corner. 

The dark before the dawn

The adventure that the deer and the boy go on together in Deer & Boy is one of puzzles and heartwarming moments, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few tense moments thrown in. Along the way, you come into contact with something called Dark Matter, a purple goop that spreads through the world and has devastating effects on the wildlife and environment, turning them into things you need to hide from rather than help. 

As it turns out, though, the deer himself might be the weapon you need to fight the darkness. The small antlers on his head are not your everyday adornments; this deer is apparently imbued with magical, darkness-fighting abilities. Together, the deer and the boy work their way through the world and fight back against the corruption threatening to take over.  

Every environment you encounter presents a puzzle. At first, the boy is entirely responsible for solving them while the deer remains safe in the backpack, but eventually the deer becomes an ally who can be sent into areas the boy can’t reach. Between the puzzles and the darkness, Deer & Boy is anything but straightforward, though that doesn’t stop it from being heartwarming all the same. 

It’s all about teamwork at the end of the day, even if half of that team is a small deer with magical antlers. 

Light amid the dark

Despite the sadness that leads to the deer and the boy finding solace in each other’s company, and the Dark Matter’s effect on everything it touches, this gorgeous game is not all doom and gloom. That’s largely down to the adorable friendship that grows between the two characters and the funny moments that happen between them. 

Making the whole misadventure more difficult is the fact that this deer has no regard for subtlety and absolutely no sense of danger, and it’s your job to keep both the deer and yourself safe. It’s like parenting a running toddler in a knife factory: sheer panic at every turn. At least in Deer & Boy you get to retry the parts you fail. The toddler in the knife factory does not offer the same luxury. 

Still, you can’t help but get attached to the little animal. Right from the very beginning, the deer becomes your responsibility, and the urge to protect it from further harm is very real. I quickly found myself talking to the deer out loud, promising I’d be right back if I had to leave him behind, or telling him he did a good job during later puzzles. 

As I said, Deer & Boy has the power to cause absolute emotional carnage, but that’s what makes it such a joy to experience. The visuals tell a story that you absolutely do not need words to fully understand, with cutscenes and gameplay blending seamlessly together. Most importantly, the characters end up being so real in your heart that they stay with you once the game is over. 

Deer & Boy was released on June 23, 2026, and I would highly recommend playing it on Steam if you enjoy a good narrative journey. This one does hold the threat of emotional devastation above your head, but I mean that in the best way possible, and you’ll fall in love with the titular pair just like I did.
