Winter Burrow is a cozy survival fairytale

If you’re looking for a game to capture your attention and keep you invested, then a survival game is a good way to go. Sadly, many survival games lean towards the horror end of the spectrum, having you fight for your life against zombies, ghouls, or even psychopathic serial killers. Winter Burrow offers something entirely different: Coziness. 

I know, the concept of cozy survival seems like a particularly juxtaposing combination, but developer Pine Creek Games has managed to blend the two genres in a way that creates something absolutely adorable and thoroughly enjoyable.

Apparently inspired by a dream of a survival game that’s less punishing than the norm for the genre, and stories such as Over the Garden Wall, Winter Burrow is shaping up to be a cozy hit. 

Survival in the woodlands

In Winter Burrow, you play as a mouse who, realistically, should probably be thinking about hibernating. Instead, you’re faced with the challenge of surviving in the woodland during the middle of winter, crafting and cooking your way through the challenging cold days ahead. You’ve been living in the big city, but now you’ve returned to the forest to find your home in ruins and your remaining family missing. 

Now you need to restore your childhood home, locate your missing aunt, survive the cold, craft yourself clothes, cook yourself food, and all on top of gathering resources that help you along the way. Venturing outside for too long will end up with you freezing where you stand, and there are bugs that want to hurt you if you get too close. 

This might seem like a tall order for a single little mouse, but your character is hardy, determined, and ready to face every challenge that comes their way. 

A slower pace of life 

According to Pine Creek Games, Winter Burrow is inspired by ‘nature, art, and fairytales’, and that’s clear in the design and story, helping towards that cozy feeling that playing provides. You are a tiny mouse in a landscape where even the most overlooked parts of nature look huge, offering up a whole new perspective of the world around you. Sometimes it’s nice to feel so small, and that’s what is provided by Winter Burrow. 

While it’s a survival game at heart, Winter Burrow is also indescribably cozy in a lot of ways. Your stump, which is run-down and decrepit when you first arrive, is yours to renovate and decorate with crafted items. You can choose how to play and how quickly you need to do things, and that lack of pressure is probably the biggest contributor to the cozy vibes the game has to offer. 

There are quests, but there is no inherent rush to do them outside of making things a little easier on yourself. One of the first quests is to knit yourself a sweater to stave off the cold outside, and you can do this immediately to allow yourself longer trips outside of the burrow, or you can stick close to home and make a quick escape once the screen starts freezing over. There are no deadlines, no timers, and no rushed moments. 

Winter Burrow does not have a release date just yet, but the full game is expected to be complete at some point before the end of 2025. If you want to get a feel for the game, you can download the demo right now through Steam.
